Castle of Kyparissia

Castle of Kyparissia

With a history spanning 4,000 years and inhabited since the Mycenaean era, Kyparissia is a city that combines the beauty of the mountains with the charm of the sea. It experienced significant prosperity during the Hellenistic period. An ancient acropolis was located on a rocky hill east of the city, where a castle was built during the Byzantine era. During the Medieval period, the area was called Arcadia due to the many Arcadians who took refuge there from Slavic raids in their region. In 1205, the castle was captured by the Franks, and from 1715 to 1821, it was under Turkish occupation. Today, the “Castle of Giants,” as it is called, continues to dominate the entire city, surrounded by traditional houses, mansions, and beautiful cobblestone streets.
