“Don Juan” at the Castle Theatre
“Don Juan” at the Castle Theatre
Duration: 120 minutes
Actor Panos Vlachos and director Lito Triantafyllidou craft a fresh narrative around the iconic anti-hero, re-examining the role of men in today’s world.
A great seducer, blasphemer, and indifferent to the consequences of his actions, Don Juan has symbolized the rejection of traditional values and the pursuit of personal freedom—from Molière to Lord Byron.
In a society marked by intense conflicts and ideological confusion, this modern version of Don Juan survives by reproducing ideologies that serve his own ambitions and desires.
In this reimagining, Panos Vlachos becomes a narcissistic leader who offers simplistic answers to a complex ideological world—brought to life alongside Kostas Filippoglou, Panagiotis Katsolis, Elektra Fragkiadaki, Eirini Bountali, and Melina Vaboula.
As Don Juan tries to escape the consequences of his actions, he finds himself in a bar. Within this microcosm of our society, he discovers his true talent: winning followers. He charms the disoriented patrons, upends conventional gender and social roles, and creates a cult around his persona.
The bar transforms into a “Church of Freedom”—a New Age cult space—and his followers become increasingly devoted. As the line between belief and manipulation blurs, Don Juan, who advocates for freedom without rules, becomes the only rule.
This bold reinterpretation of the Don Juan myth poses urgent questions:
Does our era push us to become fanatics of our chosen ideologies?
Does the message matter more than the person who delivers it?
In the age of modern “Cultural Wars,” can we hear truth from the “wrong” person, or are we blindly loyal to the figureheads of our chosen belief systems?
This provocative new take on Don Juan is the result of a remarkable collaboration of artists:
